Much like here in the U.S., school in Ethiopia ended abruptly last spring due to the Covid19 pandemic. Of course there is no such thing as virtual learning in third world countries like Ethiopia so the children have been home, helping with chores like getting water and gathering firewood for cooking.
At the time we did not know when the government would reopen schools but the word is that they have approved schools to register students for a possible opening in October. Should permission be granted for schools to open their doors, they can only be at 50% capacity.
The children have missed their teachers and their friends!
They’ve missed singing and playing together.
We’re very anxious to introduce a new group of 20 children to kindergarten…
and to resume learning for 40 returning students! Thanks to their monthly sponsors we’ve been able to provide some food staples and soap for each of the families during a very difficult season.
When classes officially begin we will have a morning and an afternoon session. The morning students will eat lunch before they go home and the afternoon group will eat when they arrive. Lunch at school (including a daily multi-vitamin) is the most nutritious meal these children get so it is a very important part of our program.
We want to thank the families who responded to our request in May for drawings to be used for some alphabet graphics in our classrooms. Several children sent in their drawings and the artists whose work was chosen have been notified. What a bright addition to the classroom these will be! The next time one of our staff can travel the laminated graphics will be delivered to the kindergarten.
